Star Wars Rebels Follows Up Tragedy With Triumph

The Strength is bigger than time itself.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for the most recent episodes of Star Wars Rebels!
Last week, Star Wars Rebels shifted in a somber management as Kanan Jarrus fabricated the ultimate sacrifice in order to relieve his family (and score a significant blow confronting the Empire in the process). This week, our heroes finished grieving for their fallen comrade and took upwards a new mission against the Empire. And in the process, they encountered a familiar confront from seasons past - Ahsoka Tano.A prominent player in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka more recently resurfaced during Season 2 of Rebels. At that place, she aided Kanan and the rest in their battles against the Sith Inquisitors. Ahsoka's graphic symbol arc reached its dramatic climax in the Season 2 finale, as she dueled Darth Vader and learned that information technology was her former master, Anakin Skywalker, underneath that fearsome armor. Vader himself escaped the ruins of the Sith temple, but Ahsoka'south fate remained unclear up until tonight'due south new episodes.

Ahsoka's return is a moment Rebels fans have been awaiting for years at this point. And it couldn't come at a better time. Even before Kanan met his end, our heroes were already struggling under the ruthless military precision of Grand Admiral Thrawn and fighting a losing battle to prevent his deadly Necktie Defender ships from becoming mass-produced. Ahsoka'due south return brings a new ray of low-cal into a series that'south never been darker than it is correct now.

That said, the fact that Ahsoka has returned is less surprising than the actual mode of her return. Every bit nosotros saw in "A World Between Worlds," the show is now dabbling in the concept of time travel, an element that's never actually been a major focus in the Star Wars franchise. Ahsoka didn't but survive the collapse of the Sith temple; she was pulled out of the battle past Ezra and into a strange realm where time and space have little pregnant. Together, she and Ezra discovered the true nature of the Jedi temple on Lothal, foiled Emperor Palpatine's plans and came to have that some tragedies must be immune to unfold as the Force wills. In perchance the about emotionally charged moment of these two episodes, Ezra prevented himself from rescuing Kanan merely before his heroic sacrifice in "Jedi Nighttime." That act, equally much as anything else in recent seasons, shows how much Ezra has grown from his early days as a headstrong, impulsive Jedi trainee.

Once more, time travel has never been much of a focus in Star Wars, which has always been much more geared towards infinite fantasy than true scientific discipline fiction. That'south not to say Rebels is suddenly pushing the franchise in a more grounded or science-driven direction. Far from it. Here, time travel is more a means to an cease in society to explore the metaphysical side of the Force. Fourth dimension itself ceases to have whatever significant for Jedi who go ane with the Strength. That much was fabricated apparent from the voices Ezra heard while traveling through the temple. This episode featured song cameos for everyone from Qui-Gon Jinn to Obi-Wan Kenobi to Yoda to Maz Kanata. Ezra was confronted by iconic dialogue from all three Star Wars trilogies, including lines that haven't been spoken notwithstanding in this pre-Episode IV setting. But in the heart of the Force, past, nowadays and future appear to bleed together. Ezra journeys into the heart of the Force.

Ezra journeys into the heart of the Force.

Past the finish of "A Earth Betwixt Worlds," things are starting to look up for Ezra and his young man Spectres again. They lost Kanan, but they may have regained another valuable ally in Ahsoka (who was returned to the Sith temple and vowed to observe Ezra and the others again). There'south petty doubt at this point that we'll run into more of Ahsoka in the last three episodes.

A better question may be how much impact this calendar week's revelations will have on the final battle. Autonomously from Hera, there's no guarantee that any of these characters will make it out of the testify alive. If anything, fans are bracing themselves for a finale similar to that of Rogue 1, where the entire master cast sacrifice their lives for the sake of the larger Rebellion. Afterward all, if Ezra and Ahsoka survive the series, that invites all sorts of difficult questions. Why weren't they around during the events of the Original Trilogy? Why didn't Obi-Wan and Yoda tell Luke that in that location are other surviving Jedi in the galaxy?

Only peradventure Ahsoka's surprise return holds an answer to that dilemma. If Forcefulness-induced time travel is now an established office of the Star Wars mythos, perchance that can give Rebels an out as far every bit allowing Ezra and friends to survive. If Ezra and Ahsoka find themselves drawn to this mysterious Force nexus all over once again, they could simply be made to sit out the events of the Original Trilogy and return when the galaxy needs them again. This could be the central to ensuring that at least some of the heroes of Star Wars Rebels survive and resurface in the mail service-Return of the Jedi animated series Disney is inevitably working on. Time travel could be the best method of finding a happy catastrophe in a catamenia when the Star Wars universe is at its darkest.
